USW Local 5 is proud to again offer scholarship opportunities to members in good standing, their children and their grandchildren. To be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in, or intend to enroll in, an accredited college or technical school in 2025. Scholarships will be awarded based on an essay submitted by the applicant. By applying for a scholarship, applicants agree that their essay may be published in USW newsletters or websites.
This year the following scholarships may be awarded: 2 @ $5,000
2 @ $2,500
4 @ $1,000
How to Apply:
Compose an essay between 500 - 1,000 words, double spaced, and typed in 12 point font. Include an introduction, body and conclusion. Five sources of information must be cited in footnotes; three of which must be non-internet. Wikipedia may not be used as a source. Include a bibliography. Your essay should be concise and free from grammatical errors. You may not use A.I. technology.
NOTE: Essays not meeting composition requirements will not be accepted.

Do not put your name on the essay. Complete the Application Form below and mail it with your essay and documentation of enrollment. The Application Form, documentation and essay must be received by May 5, 2025 at:

Essays will be judged by an independent panel selected by the Trustees. Scholarship winners will be announced at the June 3, 2025 membership meeting. The decision of the judges will be final. Scholarships will be distributed to the school on behalf of the recipient.
